Sep. 22nd, 2005 11:45 pmI love Barnes and Nobles.
I love Borders Books.
I love that they have Gay and Lesbian book sections.
So why, WHY MUST THEY PUT THEM IN THE SAME aisle as the Christianity/Religion aisle (besides them ACTUALLY giving that aisle THAT name...Religion IS Christianity...And Buddhism and Catholisim and....)?
As well as putting the bathroom at the END of the aisle so there is NO way to walk into it without going down the gay/religion aisle.
I am all for being open, being seen, and being heard, BUT there are gay men and woman who are not there yet, and I know this because there was a time when I wasn't. Back then, if I saw that the section about ME was near a high traffic area, I wouldn't even RISK going to look at it.
I love religion, I think it's fascinating, I think as a PERSONAL expression, that encompasses you and you alone, it's a great means to live your life. But when it comes to the opposition of gay people and their rights, religious people are usually the first to oppose it, as well as be louder than any other group.
Most organizations who oppose the rights of gay men and woman do so in the name of a religion.
As I peruse the Bear erotica, or check out "So ya wanna be a lesbian Vol. 3" I don't want to turn around and see people glaring at me...
Maybe I'm just extra sensitive to teenagers, and young adults (or even old adults) who are JUST finding themselves sexually because I lived that part of my life, and in high school and in college I helped OTHER people deal with it in gay support groups. I don't know.
I just wish they thought the placement out a little better.
If god made the trees and the flowers, put his followers by the gardening section. I've NEVER heard someone say, "IT SAYS HERE IN THE BIBLE! 'NO MAN SHALL GET ON HIS KNEES IN THE DIRT AND GIVE BIRTH TO VEGITATION' Corinthians 1:5."
So I think it would be a safer bet.
